Overview
We’re excited to invite you to the H5P Community Meetup in Toronto! This meetup is a space for educators, developers, designers, and learning enthusiasts who are interested in interactive content and open learning technologies.
The goal of the event is simple: bring together like-minded people, share experiences, learn from one another, and explore how H5P is being used in practice. Whether you’re just getting started with H5P or have been working with it for years, you’re very welcome to join.
The meetup will include short talks, demos, discussions, and plenty of time for networking. We want this to be a community-driven event, shaped by the people who attend.
Come learn, share, and connect with the H5P community in Toronto - we’re looking forward to meeting you.

10:40 AM - 11:10 AM | H5P: Supporting Good Instructional Design in Educational Videos Educational videos are a mainstay in pedagogical toolkits and for good reason: students enjoy learning through them. They’re engaging, convenient, and easy to consume. But there’s a problem: videos often do not produce meaningful learning and, in some cases, lead to worse learning outcomes than simply reading the same information from text. One reason is that many instructional videos do not have pedagogical best practices baked into them. With H5P, we can bring evidence-based active learning strategies into video instruction, transforming passive videos into interactive, adaptable learning experiences, without sacrificing what makes videos enjoyable. In this session, we will explore the pedagogical and design choices behind our award-winning interactive video project and examine research demonstrating how thoughtfully designed interactive videos with feedback can both promote and personalize meaningful learning en masse. 11:40 AM - 12:10 PM | From Interactivity to Learning Design: Choosing the Right H5P for the Learning Purpose H5P offers many content types for creating interactive learning, but meaningful interaction begins with the learning experience rather than the technology. Instead of starting with “Which H5P content type should I use?”, this session asks a different question: “What do I want learners to think, do, or experience?” In this session, I will share three H5P examples developed for different postsecondary learning contexts and unpack the instructional design thinking behind each one. The examples include a Film Studies Branching Scenario designed around learner choices and different pathways, an International Cinema Interactive Book that brings content and activities together into a structured learning experience, and an ESL email-writing activity that uses scaffolded practice and feedback to progressively build understanding. Rather than providing a technical tutorial on individual H5P content types, I will demonstrate how I approached each learning need, why particular H5P interactions were selected, how the learning experiences were structured, and lessons learned through the design process. Participants will leave with a practical approach they can apply to their own H5P development: start with the learning experience, then choose and design the interaction. Speaker: |
12:10 PM - 1:10 PM | Lunch & Networking |
1:10 PM - 1:40 PM | The Role of AI in the Future of Interactive Learning Discover how H5P’s generative AI solution, Smart Import, is changing the way interactive learning content is created. This session will explore how educators and learning teams can transform existing documents, presentations and recorded lectures into engaging H5P experiences more quickly and efficiently. Speaker:

1:40 PM - 2:10 PM | Rethinking Chemistry Lab Preparation with H5P Unlike lecture courses, where students are typically evaluated after learning has taken place, students in laboratory courses are often evaluated while performing a technique for the first time. Students can struggle to visualize unfamiliar techniques before entering the lab and have limited opportunities to practise the decision-making and troubleshooting skills that are essential to experimental work. Traditional pre-lab talks to train students on techniques can consume valuable laboratory time that could otherwise be spent gaining hands-on experience. To address these challenges, we developed first-person, interactive pre-lab videos and game maps with H5P that allow students to visualize themselves performing an experiment before entering the laboratory. Embedded interactions invite students to anticipate what they will need to do, make experimental decisions, troubleshoot problems, and apply the underlying theory that informs those decisions. By moving this preparation outside the laboratory, students can arrive better prepared to make the most of their limited hands-on time. In this talk, we will share our approach to designing these interactive videos, along with results from our studies examining students’ experiences with interactive video and its impact on their preparation for laboratory learning. 3:40 PM - 4:10 PM | The Last Sealift: An Immersive Project Management Branching Scenario The Last Sealift demonstrates how instructional design, interactive video and branching scenarios can transform project management learning from knowing what to do into practising what to do. Learners become the project manager for a new health centre in a remote northern community. When the final seasonal supply ship is blocked by ice, they must respond to a realistic project crisis involving competing pressures around scope, schedule, cost, risk, stakeholder needs and decision authority. There is no simple “correct” answer. Each option creates consequences and trade-offs that unfold as the scenario progresses. The experience uses video, narration, maps, project documents, environmental storytelling and character dialogue to establish context before asking learners to make consequential decisions. Branching allows learners to explore different approaches, experience their results and reconsider their assumptions without the risk associated with making those decisions on a real project. From an instructional-design perspective, the scenario moves beyond conventional content-and-quiz eLearning. Project management concepts are embedded in the problem rather than presented as abstract definitions. Learners must interpret evidence, exercise judgement and apply principles in context. Built with H5P, The Last Sealift also demonstrates what can be achieved with an accessible, web-based interactive-content platform. It combines multimedia storytelling with learner agency to create an experience that is scenario-driven, practice-oriented and grounded in authentic project decisions—showing how H5P can support sophisticated experiential learning rather than simply quizzes and content presentation.
